U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Jason Pacheco, a recovering service member with Wounded Warrior Battalion - West,Wounded Warrior Regiment, dives into the pool at the Hope and Care Center on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Sept. 4, 2019. In 2010, Pacheco was wounded by an improvised explosive device in Marjah, Afghanistan, resulting in the loss of his right leg and damage to the left. Pacheco redeployed to Afghanistan with his unit in 2012, becoming one of the few amputees to be deployed to a combat zone. In 2018, he competed in the Department of Defense Warrior Games, competing in swimming, shooting, archery, wheelchair basketball, and sitting volleyball. Pacheco was also named the Camp Pendleton Male Athlete of the Year for the same year.
