Alison Spann, a sophomore at Pepperdine University, receives the Hero Tribute Scholarship from Gen. James F. Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps, at the 2011 Scholarship Announcement Ceremony and Reception at the Library of Congress Sept. 13, 2011. Spann’s father, Marine veteran Johnny Michael Spann, was the first American killed in combat after Sept. 11, 2001.::r::::n::
