Larry Elder, son of Staff Sgt. Randolph Elder, and native of Los Angeles, speaks to a military reporter about a ceremony hosted by Marines and sailors of 5th Marine Regiment which honored Staff Sgt. Elder with the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously at the 5th Marines Memorial Garden, Aug. 16. Elder was among the first African Americans to enlist in the Marine Corps after it was desegregated during 1941 by President Franklin Roosevelt.
