U.S. Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, U.S. Navy sailors with Amphibious Squadron 11, Japan Ground Self Defense Force service members with 1st Amphibious Rapid Deployment Regiment, Japan Maritime Self Defense Force Lt. Cmdr. Yohei Tsukioka, an amphibious operations officer with Landing Ship Division 1, Steven Goodwin, the acting humanitarian assistance advisor to III Marine Expeditionary Force with the U.S. Agency for International Development, and interpreters with III Marine Expeditionary Force, participate in a staff exercise at Camp Ainoura, Sasebo, Japan, June 11-13, 2024. The staff exercise prepared both armed forces for cooperative humanitarian assistance and operations. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
