On Sept. 11, 2017 U.S. Marines with Marine Rotational Force Darwin played a rugby match against the Darwin Stray Cats Rugby Club to honor and remember the lives lost during the terrorist attacks on 9/11. The match has become an annual event to commemorate the friendships made during a rugby match that took place between U.S. Marine and sailors with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Stray Cats on September 11, 2001.
