GENTEXT/REMARKS//
1.  EACH YEAR SINCE 1968, THE PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROOM SCHOLARS PROGRAM HAS ATTRACTED THOUSANDS OF OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY TO WASHINGTON DC.  PARTICIPANTS OBSERVE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AT WORK AND ARE TAKEN BEHIND THE SCENES OF OUR NATION'S CAPITAL FOR SEMINARS AND DISCUSSIONS FEATURING MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, PRESIDENTIAL APPOINTEES,
JOURNALISTS AND OTHER WASHINGTON INSIDERS.  THE PURPOSE OF THIS MARADMIN IS TO SEEK VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTORS FOR THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROOM SEASON.
2.  VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTORS ARE NEEDED ANNUALLY FOR THIS PROGRAM AND ARE RECRUITED FROM THROUGHOUT WASHINGTON, DC AND AROUND THE COUNTRY. THIS PROGRAM IS OPEN TO ALL SNCOS AND OFFICERS WITH AN UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE. INSTRUCTORS MUST POSSESS GOOD COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE OF US GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS, ENJOY WORKING WITH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO BUILD THEIR CIVIC KNOWLEDGE AND ACT AS A ROLE MODEL TO THE STUDENTS.
3.  TWO VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTORS SUPERVISE A CAUCUS CONSISTING OF UP TO 45 STUDENTS.  INSTRUCTORS MEET WITH THE STUDENTS EACH DAY TO REVIEW SEMINARS, PLAN FOR THE NEXT DAY AND FACILITATE STUDENT DISCUSSIONS ON CURRENT EVENTS.  WORKDAYS FOR STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTORS ARE LONG AND ACTIVE,
BEGINNING BEFORE 0800 AND ENDING AFTER 2200.
4.  ALL QUALIFIED SNCOS AND OFFICERS ARE INVITED TO APPLY FOR THIS PROGRAM BY SUBMITTING THE FOLLOWING MANDATORY ITEMS AND INFORMATION:
(A) APPLICATION
(B) COMMAND PHOTO.  INCLUDE A 5X7 FULL-LENGTH PHOTO IN SERVICE ALPHA UNIFORM FOR USE IN DETERMINING MILITARY APPEARANCE.  THIS IS AN OFFICIAL PHOTO, AND MUST ADHERE TO THE GUIDELINES ESTABLISHED IN MARINE CORPS ORDER P1070.12K, MARINE CORPS INDIVIDUAL RECORDS
ADMINISTRATION MANUAL (IRAM).  
(C) BRIEF BIOGRAPHY.  ITEMS THAT MUST BE INCLUDED IN THE BIOGRAPHY
ARE:  EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND (UNIVERSITIES ATTENDED, DEGREES EARNED, COURSE OF STUDY/MAJOR), MILITARY BACKGROUND (MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY, PREVIOUS ASSIGNMENTS, DUTY STATIONS, AWARDS/RECOGNITION) AND EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH YOUTH GROUPS OR WITH YOUTH-RELATED PROGRAMS (ON/OFF DUTY ACTIVITIES OR DURING HIGH SCHOOL/COLLEGE).
(D) COMMAND ENDORSEMENT. THE APPLICANT'S IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR IS ENCOURAGED TO PROVIDE COMMENTS FOCUSED ON MATURITY, LEADERSHIP SKILLS, COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND COMMUNITY/YOUTH INVOLVEMENT.  THE ENDORSEMENT MUST INCLUDE A STATEMENT THAT, IF SELECTED, THE APPLICANT WILL BE AVAILABLE TO PARTICIPATE
IN ALL FUNCTIONS DURING THE TOTAL DURATION OF THE PRESIDENTAL CLASSROOM. THE ENDORSEMENT MUST ALSO INCLUDE THE DATES OF THE DESIRED PROGRAM.
5.  INSTRUCTORS VOLUNTEER FOR ONE WEEK (OF THE 10 SCHEDULED PROGRAM WEEKS). ALL STUDENTS AND VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTORS MUST RESIDE AT THE GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY CONFERENCE CENTER IN WASHINGTON, D.C. INSTRUCTORS ARE BILLETED DOUBLE OCCUPANCY WITH ANOTHER VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTOR, AT THE HOTEL AT NO EXPENSE TO THE VOLUNTEER OR HIS OR HER COMMAND.  THE PROGRAM PROVIDES MEALS, CURRICULUM MATERIALS AND TRAVEL IN WASHINGTON FOR ALL INSTRUCTORS.  VOLUNTEERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING AND FUNDING TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS TO AND FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.
6.  VOLUNTEERS MUST MEET MARINE CORPS HEIGHT AND WEIGHT STANDARDS AND MUST SECURE COMMAND APPROVAL AND PERMISSIVE TAD (AT NO COST TO THE GOVERNMENT) OR ANNUAL LEAVE FROM THEIR RESPECTIVE COMMAND.
7.  THE 10 WEEKS FOR APPLICATION CONSIDERATION ARE:
JUN 8-14:  PC SCHOLARS-CAMPAIGNS AND ELECTIONS JUN 15-21:  LAW, JUSTICE & HUMAN RIGHTS JUN 22-28:  ART & ARCHITECTURE OF THE NATION'S CAPITAL JUN 29-JUL 5:  PC SCHOLARS PROGRAM JUL 6-12:
GLOBAL HEALTH & THE ENVIRONMENT JUL 6-12:  SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY & PUBLIC POLICY JUL 13-19:  COMMUNICATIONS & JOURNALISM JUL 13-19:
INTELLIGENCE & NATIONAL SECURITY JUL 20-26:  FUTURE WORLD LEADERS SUMMIT AUG 3-9:  AMERICAN LEGACY 8.  LAST YEAR, OVER 500 APPLICATIONS FOR 250 AVAILABLE INSTRUCTOR POSITIONS WERE RECEIVED. IF SELECTED, THE FOLLOWING MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS MUST BE ADHERED
TO:  ATTEND A PRESIDENTAL CLASSROOM VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTOR PROGRAM ORIENTATION (PRESENTED THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK SERVED), FULLY PARTICIPATE IN THE WEEK-LONG PROGRAM, ATTEND ALL CLASSROOM FUNCTIONS (INCLUDING SEMINARS WITH GUEST SPEAKERS AND GROUP MEETINGS), TRAVEL WITH THE STUDENTS TO AND FROM ALL
CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES, ADHERE TO THE PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROOM RULES WHILE SERVING ON THE STAFF AND RESIDE AT THE GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY CONFERENCE CENTER (A MARRIOTT HOTEL) THROUGHOUT THE WEEK.
9.  THE DRESS CODE FOR ALL MALE STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTORS DURING EACH SCHEDULED DAY IS COAT AND TIE (UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED IN THE DAILY SCHEDULE).   FOR MARINE CORPS ACTIVE/RESERVE DUTY PERSONNEL (BOTH MALE AND FEMALE), SERVICE "A" (W/RIBBONS AND BADGES) IS APPROPRIATE.  THERE WILL BE ACTIVITIES DURING EACH SESSION WHERE A BUSINESS SUIT IS AN ACCEPTABLE ALTERNATIVE TO THE MILITARY UNIFORM; ONE CIVILIAN SUIT IS RECOMMENDED.  ALSO, MILITARY VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTORS TYPICALLY WEAR THEIR DRESS UNIFORM TO THE CLOSING CEREMONY AND DINNER.  DRESS BLUE "A" OR APPROPRIATE EVENING DRESS UNIFORM IS APPROPRIATE.
