SUBJ/MEMORIAL DAY SAFETY MESSAGE//
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  EACH YEAR WE OBSERVE MEMORIAL DAY, HONORING THE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE IN SERVICE TO THIS GREAT NATION.  AS A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE IT IS ONLY FITTING THAT ALL MARINES AROUND THE WORLD PAUSE, REFLECT AND PAY TRIBUTE TO THOSE THAT HAVE CHOSEN TO WEAR THE UNIFORM OF ANY OF OUR ARMED FORCES AND LAY DOWN THEIR LIFE FOR THE PRINCIPLES OF LIBERTY AND DEMOCRACY.
2.  MEMORIAL DAY UNOFFICIALLY MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THE SUMMER HOLIDAY SEASON AND A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF EXCITEMENT NATURALLY ACCOMPANIES THESE EARLY DAYS OF SUMMER.  AS YOU BEGIN TO PLAN AND ANTICIPATE THE THRILL OF OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AND GETAWAYS, I ENCOURAGE ALL MARINES AND THEIR FAMILIES TO ENJOY THE SEASON WITHOUT BECOMING STATISTICS DUE TO OFF-DUTY ACCIDENTS.  I WANT ALL MARINES TO HAVE FUN THIS SUMMER, BUT STILL TAKE SAFETY INTO CONSIDERATION.  IF YOU ARE GOING TO DRINK ALCOHOL, DO SO RESPONSIBLY...THE DECISIONS YOU MAKE WILL NOT ONLY AFFECT YOURSELVES, BUT YOUR FAMILIES, YOUR COLLEAGUES AND OUR MISSION.  JUST AS WE STAND SHOULDER TO SHOULDER ON THE BATTLEFIELD, MARINES LOOK AFTER THEIR FELLOW MARINE AT HOME AND ON LIBERTY.
3.  THIS MEMORIAL DAY SERVES TO REMIND US OF ALL THAT OUR FALLEN AND WOUNDED HAVE DONE FOR OUR NATION.  SENT INTO HARM'S WAY IN THE NAME OF LIBERTY, THESE BRAVE AMERICANS, AND THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF SERVICEMEMBERS WHO SERVED ALONGSIDE THEM, HAVE DEFEATED TYRANNY, REPELLED TERRORISM AND HAVE COME TO THE AID OF OUR NEIGHBORS AND ALLIES.  FOR THOSE CURRENTLY DEPLOYED KNOW THAT YOU REMAIN IN OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.
4.  SEMPER FIDELIS, JAMES F. AMOS, GENERAL, U.S. MARINE CORPS, COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS.//
