MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, North Carolina -- Marines with 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division participated in Military Operations in Urban Terrain on December 8, 2016. During the operations, Marines utilized tactical skills to outmaneuver and overthrow the simulated oppositional force.
MOUT is one of the most dangerous types of environments for military infantry units; having a 360 degree threat, while also having to clear buildings and being mindful of possible civilians in the area.
“What goes through my head is the safety of the Marines,” said Lance Cpl. Carmona Garcia, a fire team leader in 2/2. “Making sure no Marine is standing in the danger zone in front of windows and making sure every Marine has a job to do.”
Marines have to be tactically proficient so that they are able to secure buildings quickly and with as few simulated casualties as possible. In addition to being active physically, they also have to verbally communicate with each other in order to maneuver around buildings safely.
“The Marines should be attentive of what they see,” said Garcia. “If they see anything they should call it.”
MOUT is not only used to evaluate and teach new infantry Marines, but also to refine the skills of Marines in leadership billets.
“My main objective was to learn how to pass on word," said Garcia. “Especially when you’re inside a building, they have to know that it’s not just about talking, it’s about relaying to other Marines what’s going on in their surroundings and knowing where to stage and where to position themselves before they move on to a bigger MOUT unit.”
The Marines in 2/2 are preparing for an upcoming deployment with Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response and Black Sea Rotational Forces.
