Retired GySgt. Damaso Sutis looks through a rifle combat optic at Edson Range during his tour of Camp Pendleton Feb. 20. Sutis is a veteran of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima veterans and their friends and family visited the base to commemorate the 69th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. During their tour the guests visited Assault Craft Unit 5, Edson Range, and the Marine Corps Exchange and ate at the chow hall. Many of the veterans visit Camp Pendleton every year to attend the attle of Iwo Jima commemoration. Camp Pendleton will host the 69th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima commemoration at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 22. The public portion of the commemoration will consist of a sunset memorial service at the Iwo Jima monument outside of the Pacific Views Event Cener.
