MADISON, Wisconsin –The Marine Corps partnered with CrossFit for the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games, where thousands of athletes and spectators traveled from across the world to compete at the Alliant Energy Center, August 1-5. The Games featured the Marines’ “Battleground”, an obstacle course with cargo net rope climbs, low crawls, wall climbs and more. Also available to the spectators and competitors was the Battles Won Challenge trailer, a Marine Corps-themed mobile exercise trailer designed to test challengers physically and mentally. CrossFit promotes both a physical exercise philosophy and competitiveness; working to incorporate elements from high-interval training, Olympic weight-lifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, calisthenics, strongman, and many other training techniques. 1st Lt. Leah Pollard was recognized as the Camp Pendleton Female Athlete of the Year on Dec. 6, 2017. Pollard participated in the High Intensity Tactical Training Athlete Championship where she placed fourth against all female competitors. Deployed service members begin the “Memorial Day Murph” aboard Camp Leatherneck Afghanistan, May 24, 2014. The “Murph” is a popular CrossFit Hero workout consisting of a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 pushups, 300 squats and another mile run following the other exercises. It was named after Navy Lt. Michael Murphy, a Navy Seal who was killed while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan during 2005. The service members performed the “Murph” to reflect upon Memorial Day and to memorialize his service and the sacrifice he and his comrades made. Also available in high definition.

Sgt. Aaron Gardner, Marine with Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., and athlete, competed in the Orange County Throwdown in Costa Mesa, Calif., Jan. 11. Gardner realized his three year-old dream to participate in the CrossFit competition. Available in High Definition.

Gunnery Sgt. Randall “Jay” Johnson, an ordnance staff noncommissioned officer with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 314 “Black Knights” and a Hereford, Texas, native, was invited to the Crossfit Asia Regional Competition in Seoul, South Korea. He placed 25th out of 48 competitors. Johnson plans to continue to excel in Crossfit and spread his love to Marines. Available in high definition.
