Lance Cpl. Nicholas R. Smarr, a Reserve Marine, was killed in the line of duty when responding to a domestic disturbance call in Americus, Ga. on Dec. 7, 2016, while serving as a police officer for the Americus Police Department. Janice Smarr, the mother of Lance Cpl. Nicholas Smarr, accepts the Navy and Marine Corps Medal on behalf of her son at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Ga., Dec. 7, 2018. The Navy and Marine Corps Medal is the highest non-combat decoration awarded for heroism by the Department of Defense. (Directed and edited by Sgt. Andy O. Martinez; Videography by Sgt. Andy O.
